It's possible to normalize a file according to RMS-volumes. During the rip process an RMS calculation is performed. You're able to define a maximum rms-value. If you normalize the track later, it is normalized so that every file which is louder than the normalize value is damped to the prefered value. Statistics over a large number of files have shown, that the majority of files are around -20 dB average RMS, so this is probably a good starting point for your own normalisation attempts. Normally it is not possible to increase the level of a file which has a lower rms level, because the peak-level is already around 0 dB.
PEAK: Normalize to peak
RMS: Normalize to average-RMS value
NONE: Normalize deactivated
